Reading is a very important part of your experience at Waccamaw Middle School
and we hope that each of you will become a life-long pleasure reader.
Summer is a time for reading, for learning, for exploring new books,
and for reading those books that you never had time for during the busy school year.
Every student at Waccamaw Middle School is required to read at least one book from the South Carolina Junior Book Award list.
7th Grade
Rising 7th graders at Waccamaw Middle School are encouraged to read several books of their choice during the summer
but are required to read at least one book from the SC Junior Book Award Nominees list.
7th Grade GT/ELA are required to read 2 books from the South Carolina Junior Book Award list.
All 7th Grade students will complete a project for each required book within the first 2 weeks of school.

8th Grade
Rising 8th graders at Waccamaw Middle School are encouraged to read several books of their choice during the summer
but are required to read at least one book from the SC Junior Book Award Nominees list.
Upon the start of the school year, students will receive an assignment based on their book.
8th grade ELA students will have a variety of projects to pick from, including projects in poetry, technology, writing, and visual arts.
Students enrolled in English I are required to read 1 book from the South Carolina Junior Book Award list.

Students enrolled in English I are also encouraged to read To Kill a Mockingbird over the summer.
To Kill a Mockingbird will be the first novel study of the year.
